Cape Disappointment, Washington

After missing the entrance to what was later named the Columbia River, English explorer John Meares dubbed the massive headland jutting out into the Pacific Ocean "Cape Disappointment." That was in 1788. Almost 20 years later, Capt. William Clark and members of the Corps of Discovery explored the headland in their final push to the Pacific Ocean.

Our visit to Cape Disappointment wasn't exactly a disappointment, but it wasn't a raging success either. Torrential rains that the news called "epic, even by the Northwest's standards" started within hours of our arrival, and didn't stop for days.

Dan and Emily met up with us and we tried to make the most of it, hiking along the beach in the dark until we got trapped by incoming tide. Josh, Dan and several of the kids had to scramble up barnacle covered rock to avoid being swept out to sea. It was a massive wave and scared our boys enough that they were done with the beach. Josh learned that barnacles are very sharp.

We rented yurts, played games, watched mostly tame raccoons as they scoured the place, marveled at the hundreds of frogs jumping across the roads, counted at least 10 deer, and were nearly blown off the face of the cliff when we toured the lighthouse museum.

Wilderness Survival

Jake and his friends construct a shelter beneath a downed pine tree to sleep in so that they can earn their Wilderness Survival Merit Badge. They all slept in it, despite stinging nettle and an over-curious moose.

No, Colter isn't flipping off the camera. He's showing off his new stitches. The boys learned that karate chopping a swarm of wasps with a kitchen knife isn't an effective bug deterrent, but is an effective Boy Scout deterrent.

wonderful, glorious day!

This was the view that greeted us as we drove into Teton Valley today.
 It felt like a GIFT
even if the sun was so bright that it made picture taking really hard
especially with three very silly boys!

a little Bouldering

The boys chose rock climbing for their "sport" this fall. They are practicing the technique called "Bouldering" here. According to Wikipedia, "bouldering is a style of rock climbing undertaken without a rope and normally limited to very short climbs over a crash pad (Their mom thanks you crash pad!) so that a fall will not result in serious injury (At least let's hope. With these boys anything is possible.). It is typically practiced on large natural boulders or artificial boulders in gyms and outdoor urban areas. However, it may also be practiced at the base of larger rock faces (Sorry boys. Mom is vetoing this option), or even on buildings or public architecture."

Dan & Emily come for a visit

Dan and Emily stopped in for a visit. It was so much fun seeing them! We walked around BYU-Idaho, visited Grams in Driggs, went to a park and learned a few yoga poses from Dan. He truly is the man, but he just might kill us if we posted the picture proof, so you will just have to take our word for it.

R Mountain "Sexy Pose"

Got your attention with the word sexy, didn't I? Ha! Me doing a sexy pose? That's just gross. Seriously gross.

One of my best friends just moved back to Rexburg for the year. We are the best-worst of best friends, going months without talking, but then it's like we talked yesterday when we do finally connect. Not a lot of pressure. Obnoxiousness usually reigns. It's been great having her here.

This is a self portrait I took while on a hike to the Menan Buttes ("R" Mountain for those Rick's alumni) that we went on last month. This is our "sexy pose" in honor of her husband, Greg. Sorry Greg, we couldn't keep a straight face long enough to be seductive. But, we had a great time anyway. Thanks for loaning your family to us Idahoans!!
